Class C (later 40) consisted of two distinct designs of 4-6-4T. The original batch, delivered in 1929, had Caprotti valve gear. Two further batches, delivered 1939-40, had rotary cam poppet valve gear and smoke deflectors. In appearance they were like a tank version of the Class O pacifics. A fourth batch was cancelled, presumably due to wartime events.
