KTM leased 39 of these locomotives, secondhand from Indian Railways. They were intended as a stopgap until more up-to-date traction could be obtained, and will eventually be returned to India. For this reason they have retained their Indian Railways fleet numbers. The original locos were delivered to Indian Railways between 1961 and 1993. The first examples came from Alco (1961-1964) and Montreal Locomotive Works (1964), but later batches were built by India's Diesel Locomotive Works. With the arrival of the Blue Tigers, we can expect the YDM-4s to be phased out of KTM service in the near future.
